Transfer News: Benfica’s Darwin Nunez is Newcastle United’s top priority to bolster their European ambitions

Benfica’s Darwin Nunez has been one of the world football’s breakout stars this season, with Newcastle United now among his suitors. Nunez has scored 24 goals in 24 Primeira Liga games, as well as six goals in 10 Champions League appearances which is the highest any Benfica player has ever scored in a single Champions League campaign.

After excelling in the Champions League, Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez has attracted interest from Newcastle United. The Portuguese striker is not short of suitors all around Europe with a host of clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United, West Ham, PSG, Barcelona, and others inquiring about his services.

Newcastle United has now also been linked with all sorts of big-name signings for the upcoming transfer window, but Footmercato reported that they have made an initial offer of £50million for Darwin in an effort to fend off the challenge of rival clubs.

Benfica are in a stronger position when it comes to negotiating a transfer for Darwin Nunez as his current contract does not expire until June 2025 and according to some sources, has a release clause in excess of 120 million euros. Meanwhile, Newcastle United sees Nunez as one of many marquee signings that will spearhead their European ambitions in the future and have been linked with a host of high-profile players.
