WATCH: “Inhumane and despicable,” Turkish football league suspended after a club President KICKED and PUNCHED a referee
A Turkish club president has punched a referee in a league game, forcing the FA to suspend all league games.

A harrowing incident has shocked the footballing world and brought Turkish football to a standstill. Turkish league referee Halil Umut Meler was ‘attacked’ by a club president and staff following a Turkish Süper Lig game featuring Ankaragücü and Rizespor. The match official was punched in the face and then kicked by club staff following which all forms of football in Turkey have been suspended indefinitely.
The match referee was standing alongside his assistants after the full-time whistle on the pitch. As per videos, the referee was caught by a right hook from Ankaragücü President Faruk Koca. Meler immediately hit the ground, as another unidentified man proceeded to kick him in the face. Players and staff immediately formed a ‘barrier’ around the referee as well.
Following the incident, the Turkish Football Federation has announced its decision to suspend all league matches in the country. Games across the country remain suspended for an indefinite period. It was also reported that Koca was also attacked after being led away from the scene of the brawl. Meler was also helped to his feet and led off the pitch.

In yet another episode of ‘bizarre’ scenes in Turkish football, a referee has been punched and kicked by a club President and staff. The shocking incident has forced netizens to ask what circumstances led to the event. A 1-1 draw between Ankaragücü and Rizespor was played out at the Eryaman Stadium. However, a late equalizer by the visitors enraged the staff and management of the home side.
Ankaragücü took the lead in the 14th minute through Olimpiu Moruţan and were cruising to secure the three points. A win against Rizespor would see them be in touching distance of their visitors, while also rising to 9th. However, a last-gasp equalizer by Adolfo Gaich sent the home fans into turmoil. The events that ensued have been labeled “inhumane and despicable” by the Turkish Football Federation.
The official statement informs that the federation is closely monitoring Halil Umut Meler’s health. They also wished a speedy recovery for the official. They strongly commended all acts of violence against officials. Moreover, the federation said that statements that target referees, made by coaches and TV commentators have led to the regrettable incident.
