“Practiced 1000 penalties only to miss EVERY SINGLE F*CKING ONE when it actually mattered” – Twitter blasts Spain after shocking defeat against Morocco at 2022 FIFA World Cup
Morocco defeated Spain in the round of 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, sending La Roja home. Moroccans kept Spain at bay for 120 minutes before Luis Enrique’s team was eliminated after losing a 3-0 penalty shootout. Pablo Sarabia hit the post with Spain’s first penalty having done the same from point-blank range in the 119th minute of extra time.
Sergio Busquets and Carlos Soler also saw their penalties saved by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Morocco’s victory was secured with a clever panenka past a helpless Unai Simon by their star player Achraf Hakimi.
Fans were quick to taunt Spain after their manager Luis Enrique had previously told in a media interview that he had made it mandatory for every player to practice 1000 penalties after their 2020 Euro loss against Switzerland. Morocco has now become just the third African country to reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup tournament and as they say ‘Sky is the limit’ for them going forward.
