In a tragic event on Monday, two people wearing Sweden jerseys were fatally shot by a suspected extremist before the Belgium vs Sweden international match. Due to safety concerns, fans were temporarily held in the stadium. The incident has raised global alarm.

As reported by a local news source, the shooting occurred about 3 miles from the King Baudouin Arena where the Belgium vs. Sweden match was being held. Additionally, the victims were Swedish fans, suggesting a targeted attack by the extremist.

Later, Brussels police shut off the scene and initiated a manhunt for the perpetrator. It was not until now, the reputed news agency AP reports that Police shot the suspected extremist dead.

A video, assumed to be that of the incident has been circulating on social media. In it, a person wearing a fluorescent orange jacket is seen chasing a person into a building. Gunshots are heard as well. Several other videos of a person wearing an orange jacket assumed to be the gunman, have surfaced on social media. Moreover, Belgium’s National Crisis Centre also raised a ‘Terrorist Alert’ before finally the Police force put the gunman down.

UEFA suspends Belgium vs Sweden match after players refuse to walk out in second half

The shooting in Brussels has raised serious concerns in the country. The incident, which occurred prior to the Belgium vs Sweden game saw the terrorist alert rise to the highest level in the city of Brussels. This ultimately led to the game being abandoned at halftime on Monday. The fans were then forced to remain inside the stadium, pointing to security concerns.

It is understood that the players refused to go out on to the pitch in the final 45 minutes. A PA announcement was made saying, “The players have decided that they do not wish to continue the match, taking into consideration what happened earlier in Brussels.” Additionally, a UEFA spokesperson also clarified the issue and said that after discussion with both teams, the Euro Qualifier has been abandoned.

UEFA pointed to a “suspected” terrorist attack and decided to suspend the match after consulting with local police. Romelu Lukaku and Viktor Gyokeres scored in the first half, which ended 1-1. Moreover, reports have also surfaced regarding the assailant’s identity. A video of a person wearing an orange jacket from the suspected scene of the murders has also gone viral.
