Former Women’s World Cup champion with USA, Megan Rapinoe wishes to end her illustrious career by winning the National Women’s Soccer League. The game takes place on the 11th of November and will see OL Reign take on Gotham FC in the finals.
Megan Rapinoe, 38, who retired from the national team this year, aims to win the NWSL title before ending her 14-year professional career. Having played with OL Reigns since 2013, she expressed that winning with Barnes, Fishlock, and Harvey would mean “everything” to her.
Rapinoe also spoke about the camaraderie present in the squad claiming:
That would [be] a life moment. Something that we would obviously never forget, with all that we've shared and how close we are, and everything we've been through.
Rapinoe’s sentiments are also shared by her teammates who spoke on the World Cup winner’s influence on the squad. Veronica Latsko, the 27-year-old, said:
She is the team. When we're doing it for the team, we're doing it for Pinoe'. She gives 110%, that's the beauty of this team, everybody matches it. That's what she brings out here.
With the finals set to take place at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California, Rapinoe will be looking to win her first-ever NWSL Championship.
How will Megan Rapinoe’s professional career be remembered?
Known for her controversies outside of the pitch, Megan Rapinoe has backed up all criticisms she has faced on it. A 2x World Cup winner with the US Women’s National Team, the 38-year-old’s stellar career is approaching its final chapter in which she will be remembered as one of the greatest American players to ever represent her country.
Megan Rapinoe, with 203 national team appearances, played a key role in the US winning consecutive World Cups in 2015 and 2019. In 2015, Carli Lloyd took the spotlight, but in 2019, Rapinoe outshone her by winning both the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot, securing the USWNT’s historic third World Cup victory for women.
Despite limited recognition for her club career, the player gained international experience, playing in Australia with Sydney FC and joining Olympique Lyonnais Féminin in Europe. This marked her Champions League debut with the French club.
Although Megan Rapinoe has faced criticism beyond the football field, her significant contributions to women’s football make her an enduring inspiration for the youth in her nation.
