Days after Brazil and Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr. broke down during an interview, a former international has come forward to make a strange claim. Vinicius, in a recent interview spoke of his struggles with racism and how people in Spain racially abuse players. However, instead of supporting his fellow countryman, Donato has come forward to defend Spain!
A teary-eyed Vinicius Jr. admitted that it had become more and more difficult to find the will to play amidst racist abuse. He also added that many people in Spain did not know what was and was not considered racist. Vinicius added that he will continue the fight against racism and has no plans to leave the club. While many expected footballers and those in power come forward in support of the No.7, Donato has done the opposite.
Spain isn't racist, but racism does exist. If I'm playing against Vinicius, I'll call him a n***a to provoke him. That isn't racism, it's called provocation.Former Brazil star Donato told the press
While many rallied in support for the player, a certain faction of fans criticized the former Deportivo player for his ‘insensitive’ comments and reactions.
Vinicius Jr. captains Brazil in anti-racism game vs Spain
Brazilian winger Vinicius Jr. was a man on a mission as he led his side to face Spain in an international friendly on Wednesday. Prior to the game, the player broke down in front of the press, after being quizzed about the repeated incidents of racism in Spain. However, he let none of his emotions get to him at the Santiago Bernabeu, as he led his team to a thrilling 3-3 draw against the hosts.
The Madrid winger, however, failed to get on the scoresheet and had a less than impressive night according to his standards. The forward managed to compete zero successful dribbles while also racking up a 50% passing success rate. He was eventually subbed off in the 71st minute for Aston Villa forward Douglas Luiz.
As for the game itself, Rodri and Dani Olmo scored the goals for the hosts. The former netted twice from the spot while Olmo did brilliantly to tear through the Brazilian back line. As for the Canaries, Rodrygo, Endrick and Lucas Paqueta found the net. The visitors came back from a two-goal deficit, while also needing a 96th minute penalty to settle the game level.
