Real Madrid’s match against Almeria was marred by controversy as questionable referee decisions allowed the Los Blancos to avoid a potential home defeat. Fans were divided over VAR’s decision to not rule out Vinicius Jr‘s equalizer, despite an apparent handball.

The Los Blancos experienced a sloppy start as they went 2-0 down against Almeria in the very first half of the match, following goals from Largie Ramazani and Edgar Gonzalez. f Almeria had maintained the lead, it would have marked their first season. However, the match ended with a 3-2 score in favor of the home side, owing to a few faulty refereeing decisions, that raised concerns. Despite the win briefly propelling Real to the top of the table, Girona later surpassed them.

Referees and VAR disallowed Almeria midfielder Sergio Arribas’ goal for a minor foul on Jude Bellingham. Conversely, VAR allowed Vinicius’ equalizing goal in the 67th minute, despite an apparent handball. Madrid’s second goal sparked controversy, as Vinicius appeared to use his upper arm to guide the ball into the net.

Initially disallowed by the on-field referee, the goal was later approved by video officials. A similar handball decision went in favor of the home side after Almeria defender Kaiky‘s handball, resulting in a penalty goal by Bellingham.

While the Almeria players and managers expressed their displeasure at the referee calls made, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti expressed his support for the match officials, claiming that all three decisions were absolutely clear and correct.
