“Virgil van Dijk is a Rolls-Royce”- Football pundit slams Liverpool defender for horrific performance against Manchester United

Time and again, after a falling performance a player is called numerous things and objectified as well, this time it is Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk. After a bad performance on the Monday game against arch-rivals Manchester United, Liverpool had to settle for a score of 2-1 losing to United. Humiliation for Liverpool as they are yet to win a game in the Premier League this season.

A football pundit has quoted, “Virgil Van Dijk is a Rolls-Royce”, which may sound good to the viewers but concerning football, it is a well-known criticism, as a Rolls-Royce is a huge car with the least amount of agility, acceleration, and reflexes, and so does Van Dijk, the quote is pointed in the direction of the Netherlands national’s disappointing performance against the Red Devils.

The Dutch defender, couldn’t stop a supposed to be ‘easy to stop’ attempt from Jadon Sancho towards the goal post, which has landed him between harsh criticism and sarcastic comments such as these. The objectification of professional footballers is no new deal to handle, with the better performance he can cure everything harm done to his image.

Is Virgil Van Dijk a one-season wonder?

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk leaves the game with an injury after a challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

In the year 2019, the Dutch stood second place in the Ballon d’Or while Lionel Messi lifted the trophy for the record 7th time. The thing to gather and concentrate on here is that on the 2018 list and the previous to that, Van Dijk wasn’t even nominated, and more shockingly after being placed second, in 2021 as well there was no nomination considering the fall in performance.

The year 2019, was monumental for Virgil having laurels kept aside, the defender was causing trouble to almost everyone having the record of no one beating him in the Champions League. But the following years and the years later the level of performance was poor when compared to 2019. Probably the only season in which Virgil outperformed his peers.

Marking the series of bad performances by the player, it is to be hoped that he returns with valor and passion to his lost performing ability. The pundits would keep calling him whatever they wish, but performance is the only way out.
