WATCH: Wales players sing Shakira’s song ‘Waka Waka’ after qualifying for FIFA World Cup 2022
After overcoming a 64-year wait by reaching for the Qatar World Cup this year, the Wales national team was ecstatic.
After a 1-0 victory over Ukraine at the Cardiff City Stadium, Robert Page’s side qualified for the main event for the first time since 1958. As the celebrations lasted late into the night, the entire squad went to Gareth Bale’s Elevens bar in Cardiff.
Aaron Ramsey and Mark Harris posted videos of themselves dancing to Shakira’s “Waka Waka” song with a little lyric alteration. ‘This time for Africa,’ instead of ‘we’re heading to Qatar,’ was modified in the chorus’s last line.
Ramsey also shared a video of himself and his close buddy, Dragons star Chris Gunter, celebrating with supporters outside the bar. Meanwhile, Jonny Williams was filming Page’s movements in the dressing room as he got the celebration began.
Wales in frenzy as they enter their maiden World Cup:
The players sang “Pagey’s on fire, your defense is afraid!” as the Wales manager, who took over from Ryan Giggs after his arrest in November 2020, kicked off the party with the classic “Freed from Desire.”
“It’s incredible,” Page remarked after the game. I’m really proud of these young men. They earned it wholeheartedly. All they lacked was a World Cup, which they now have.
“The audience was tremendous. They are, without a doubt, the finest football fans in the world. They have been there for us since the beginning and deserve all of the praise.
“Before kick-off, I was more thrilled than apprehensive because I trust these guys.” I’ve seen them in practice and have full confidence in these young men.”
Wales will now compete in Group B alongside England, Iran, and the United States, hoping to improve on their performance in 1958, when they entered the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Brazil.
