“Wandering round like a kid in a sweet shop!”- Gary Neville takes dig at Chelsea owner Todd Boehly over haphazard transfer dealings

Todd Boehly, the owner of Chelsea, has been compared by Gary Neville to infamous Manchester United transfer mastermind Ed Woodward. The Blues lost 2-1 at Southampton on Tuesday night, their second Premier League loss of the year. Raheem Sterling, a summer signing from Manchester City, scored the game’s first goal, but for Southampton, Romeo Lavia and Adam Armstrong answered back.

Roman Abramovich was obliged to sell Chelsea quickly after his assets were frozen by the UK government in reaction to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, causing chaos at Stamford Bridge this summer. Boehly, a US billionaire, prevailed in the struggle to buy the team, but his transfer business has come under scrutiny.

The £50 million transfer of England’s Sterling was accompanied by high-priced transfers for Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella, Gabriel Slonina, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Cesare Sasadei. Prior to the deadline on Thursday, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Anthony Gordon, Wesley Fofana, and Frenkie de Jong have all attracted extensive interest.

Gary Neville quoted one of Chelsea legend John Terry’s tweets after the Blues’ disappointing loss to Southampton

With an honest appraisal of the performance and the status of the team, club legend John Terry was unhappy to see the Blues fall short on the south coast. Terry wrote: “I hate seeing us get beat. Southampton were very good, but we look very unbalanced at the minute. I can’t wait for the window to close and get our settled squad, team and formation. We miss Reece so much when he doesn’t play. 22-years-old and a future captain in my opinion.”

And that led to Neville responding to the tweet by writing: “Your man Todd Woodward needs to stop wandering round like a kid in a sweet shop!” Given that Neville frequently launched outbursts about United’s previous executive vice-chairman, who served as their CEO before he left earlier this year, comparing Boehly to Woodward is undoubtedly not a compliment.

Woodward led one of the worst periods at Old Trafford, and his unfocused transfer dealings were frequently criticized as the cause of the team’s decline from Sir Alex Ferguson’s peak.
