WATCH: AS Roma’s coach Jose Mourinho gives tribute to Napoli’s legend Diego Maradona
AS Roma Jose Mourinho paid his respect to Diego Maradona at his Mural in Naples ahead of his side’s clash against Napoli in Serie A in the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. Girdled by die-hard fans of Maradona’s former club and adjoined by police, Mourinho laid flowers at the notorious point ahead of the crunch Serie A match between Roma and Napoli.
The tempera was created following the death of Diego Maradona, extensively considered as one of the greatest to ever play the game, and allows Loved ones to pay their personal respects to’El Diego’.
Diego Maradona, who died at the age of 60 after suffering a heart attack in November 2020, remains a hallowed figure at Napoli, where he played from 1984 to 1991. The club enjoyed the most successful period in their history during his time there as they won what remains their only two Serie A titles, the UEFA Cup-a jewel they’ve not lifted since-and the Coppa Italia.
Maradona scored 115 goals in 259 appearances for Napoli. Similar was his status in Naples that his death 18 months ago hit just as hard to fellow Naples residents as it did to the people of his native Argentina.
Meanwhile, AS Roma, who reached the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League on Thursday, is fifth in Serie A. Mourinho’s side trails third-placed Napoli by nine points heading into Monday’s match at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Jose Mourinho, the man now in charge of Roma, – having previously worked with Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, and Manchester United – said after learning that the South American icon had died: “Maradona the world knows, the world never forgets. I made sure that my son knows a lot about him, even being born after he was a player. I know my son will make sure when he is a father he will not let his kids forget.”
“It was a bit similar with [Alfredo] Di Stefano; I never saw him play football, but my dad made sure I knew a lot about him. With these generations, we have players of our generations, and in my generation was what everybody knows,” added Mourinho.
The Legacy of Diego Maradona
On 25 November, at the age of 60, Maradona suffered cardiac arrest and died in his sleep at his home in Dique Lujan, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.
Diego Armando Maradona was one of the greatest players to play the game, winning everything wherever he went club and international goals alike. He even scored goals that are even theoretically impossible like the ‘Hand of God’ goal in the 1986 World Cup against England, which made him win the FIFA World Cup for Argentina.
People will be talking about Diego Maradona 100 years from now because of the way he played the game. He was too strong, too skillful, and too ruthless for his competitors. His character on and off the pitch made his legend even greater and his skill transcended generations.
Decades of children have grown up trying to replicate the creativity of Diego Maradona. Millions have dropped their jaws when watching him live, watching videos of his brilliance, or when reading books about his tales off the pitch. His genius in the 1986 World Cup, as he single-handedly (pun intended) led Argentina to glory, stole the hearts of the world.
