On Nov. 2, 2000, the ex-Vancouver Whitecaps defender was born in a refugee camp in central Ghana. His Liberian parents, according to his profile on the club’s website, migrated to Ghana after fleeing their nation due to civil conflict.

“It was difficult and risky.” It was difficult to live there because the only way to survive sometimes was to carry firearms as well,” Debeah Davies, the soccer star’s father, said in a Whitecaps video from 2018. “We weren’t interested in firing firearms.” As a result, we made the decision to just flee.”

Davies and his family eventually ended themselves in Canada when he was five years old, settling in Ontario in 2006. The family relocated to Edmonton a year later

“Canada is a pioneer in refugee resettlement,” adds Davies, who is also a UNHCR goodwill ambassador. “I’m glad to hear that more individuals, like my family, will be able to rebuild their lives,” he said, according to the UNHCR.

According to the UNHCR, Canada hosted more refugees than any other country in the world last year.

According to the government’s website, Canada maintains two primary refugee programs. The Refugee and Humanitarian Resettlement Program are for “those in need of protection from outside Canada,” while the In-Canada Asylum Program is for persons seeking asylum from within Canada.

The government points out that people cannot apply for resettlement directly to Canada, and that the UN Refugee Agency is in charge of identifying refugees for resettlement. In addition, private sponsors assist in the resettlement of refugees in this country.
