Spanish giants Real Madrid faced Liverpool in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round-of-16 match on February 22. The 14 times Champions League winners have a history against the Merseyside club in the Champions League. Liverpool, who lost their last match against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final last season in May 2022, will be looking to exact their revenge in the first leg. Liverpool also has considerable firepower in their squad, including Egyptian winger Mohammed Salah. Uruguyan Darwin Nunez and Salah scored two goals in the first half of the thrilling match but failed to retain the lead in the first half.
Real Madrid fell short in the opening 10 minutes, as Nunez netted a goal in the 4th minute, putting them behind with a delicate flick. Madrid’s confidence was below par as they struggled to hold onto the ball. Los Blancos had a huge problem in their hands when Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made a huge blunder, which Salah utilized perfectly, scoring the second goal in the 14th minute.
Real Madrid was struggling to keep the ball as Liverpool continued to dominate the game. Liverpool’s high pressing on the ball led to Real losing out possession quite a few times in the first 20 minutes. Mohammed Salah became the highest African goal scorer in the UCL, overtaking Didier Drogba’s record of 44 goals. Vinicius Jr, who had been on the receiving end of racial abuse in his recent games in La Liga, once again silenced his haters, as he took one back for Real Madrid, scoring in the 21st minute.

Liverpool looked threatening to score their third goal early, as they continued to press Real Madrid back from their right wing. David Alaba was struggling to close down the attacks before going off injured. Cody Gakpo kept attacking Real’s heart of the defence, his pass towards the right wing led to their second goal. Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson Becker returned the favor of Courtois’s blunder, as his misplaced pass deflected off Vinicius Jr into the goal, in the 36th minute. The game looked full of errors on both sides, as they headed into the half-time with a 2-2 draw.
Fans stormed Twitter after an enthralling first half at the Anfield Stadium, as they mocked Thibaut Courtois for his huge blunder which led to Liverpool’s second goal. “COURTOIS DECIDED TO TURN INTO KARIUS,” a fan mocked, reminiscing Liverpool’s former goalkeeper Lorius Karius’ huge errors in the UCL final against Real Madrid in 2018.
Real Madrid headed into halftime 2-2, as both sides made huge errors, while Vinicius Jr scored a brace. Madrid will be looking to get a grip on the game, while Liverpool will hope for more errors from the Los Blancos. Meanwhile, Nacho Fernandez replaced an injured David Alaba in the left-back position.
