One of Turkey’s “big three” football clubs, Fenerbahçe, was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round after falling to Dynamo Kyiv of Ukraine on their home field. Numerous spectators at the ükrü Saracolu Stadium began chanting Vladimir Putin’s name following Dynamo Kyiv’s opening goal.

Following allegations that some Fenerbahce supporters seemed to sing Russian military hero Vladimir Putin’s name during a Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Kyiv, some supporters want the Turkish team disqualified from UEFA play.

The scandalous occurrence happened on Wednesday night at the Ulker-Stadium during the return leg of the second qualifying round match. After Ukrainian player Buyalskyi gave Dynamo a 1-0 victory on the evening, large groups of Fenerbahce supporters could be heard screaming Putin’s name.

Before spinning away and making an eagle motion with his hands, Buyalskyi nudged a cross home at the near post. Some have speculated that this was an homage to Fenerbahce’s bitter rivals Besiktas.

The home crowd took offense to it and began to shout “bloodthirsty scoundrel Putin” as the two teams reassembled to form the starting lineup.

A video of supporters singing the chant has received over 3 million views to far. Supporters all around the world expressed fury online in response to the clip. Some expressed their outrage at the offensive song, and some even demanded that Fenerbahce be disqualified from UEFA play.
