WATCH: Wembley sells out while hosting Manchester United v Chelsea Women’s FA Cup final
Chelsea vs Manchester United takes place at Wembley on Sunday.
Manchester United have chance to create history to win their first ever FA Cup.
Another landmark will be reached, another record broken with Sunday’s Women’s FA Cup final. For the third time this season, Wembley will be sold out for a women’s game. Chelsea and Manchester United will walk out in front of about 90,000 fans, almost double the previous record for the final, set last year. Manchester United and Chelsea will make women’s football history this afternoon during a sold-out FA Cup final at Wembley.
This feat comes a year ahead of the target set by the Football Association in 2020. “We are immensely proud to have achieved this sell-out,” says Marzena Bogdanowicz, the FA’s head of marketing for women’s football. “It’s been a team effort across the whole of the FA and also the two finalists, who have showcased the importance of the fixture and the occasion to their fans.”
Emma Hayes’ and Marc Skinner’s sides go head-to-head as just one point separates the teams in the Women’s Super League, with Chelsea rapidly closing in on United with their games in hand following the UEFA Women’s Champions League. However, with Chelsea dominating the fixtures in the league so far this season, United are yet to win against them this season.
The Reds have endured a nail-biting cup run but have scored 13 goals in the four games that have taken them to the final, while rivals Chelsea have faced top-flight opponents throughout their entire FA Cup run, netting nine goals in four games, conceding just three. Of the last 10 Women’s FA Cup finals, Chelsea have competed in six. Of those six, they’ve claimed four for themselves.
How many times have Chelsea and Manchester United won the Women’s FA Cup?
Chelsea and Manchester United take a temporary break from their epic Women’s Super League title race this afternoon when the two sides meet at a sold-out Wembley for the Women’s FA Cup final. Chelsea is just a point behind United in the WSL table having played one game less, and today’s final presents both clubs with the opportunity to move one step closer to securing a historic league and cup double.
The Blues have won the Women’s FA Cup four times in their history. Their first victory in the competition came in 2015, with a first-half goal from Ji So-yun sealing a 1-0 victory over Notts County. A second title was added in 2018, with the Blues prevailing 3-1 over London rivals Arsenal. Chelsea got the better of Arsenal once again in the 2021 final, running out 3-0 winners in the game. The 2022 final saw Chelsea beat Manchester City 3-2 in extra time.
Manchester United have yet to lift the trophy in the Women’s FA Cup. In fact, Sunday’s game is the first time the club will have featured in the final. United are aiming to become the first team to win in their first appearance in the Women’s FA Cup final since Manchester City in 2017. However, they will need to do something they have never done before in their history, beat Chelsea in a competitive game having drawn one and lost eight of their previous nine meetings.
