Wayne Rooney, the former England star, praised Arsenal as one of Europe’s top sides on Thursday. However, he also expressed frustration after his MLS All-Star team suffered a comprehensive 5-0 defeat against them. The Gunners, managed by Mikel Arteta, displayed their quality with goals from Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard, Jorginho, Gabriel Martinelli, and Kai Havertz.
Rooney acknowledged the impressive performance of the Premier League runners-up in the post-match press conference at Audi Field. However, he also candidly shared his dissatisfaction with certain aspects of the event. As an up-and-coming coach, he admitted that there was little he could take away from the game, considering the lack of time for tactical preparation.
The MLS All-Star team had limited practice sessions due to logistical challenges and arrived just before the match. Rooney also slammed the sponsors of the game, Apple as they caused seating issues. The manager’s backroom staff were not provided with seats as they were occupied by the sponsors. “Everything around this game is great publicity for the league, but my staff got kicked out of their seats today by members of Apple,” said Rooney.
He also criticized the refereeing in the game. “The game was a bit stop-start because once again the referee made it a bit about himself,” “That’s something I’ve said all season that needs improving in the MLS so this is a good opportunity for me to bring it up again,” he said. He clearly seemed heavily frustrated with the defeat, which might be due to his rivalry with Arsenal during his playing days at Manchester United.
Wayne Rooney praises new Manchester United signing Jonny Evans
Wayne Rooney continued to hold Jonny Evans in high regard, considering him a fantastic player. Manchester United had a busy day, initially announcing the return of Evans on a short-term deal. The defender, who previously left the club eight years ago, had impressed during training sessions under manager Erik ten Hag. He said, “Yeah, I think Jonny is a fantastic player.” “I’m assuming he’s signed as cover and [in case] there are any injuries to the centre-backs that are starting.”
Furthermore, Rooney expressed his delight over Marcus Rashford’s decision to sign a new long-term deal with Manchester United. The young forward’s commitment to the club was undoubtedly a positive development for the team’s future.
With Rashford’s contract extension and the addition of Evans, Rooney seemed pleased with the club’s moves and appeared optimistic about Manchester United’s prospects moving forward.
