Former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney has made headlines with his daring predictions for this season’s Champions League campaign. He stated that if Manchester City wins both the UCL and the Premier League, they will be considered alongside the iconic Manchester United club of 1999.
Rooney suggested that City could surpass United’s 2008 squad which he was a part of. He said, “If Man. City win the UCL and the title, I think you put them up there with the 1999 United side. Our 2008 team was great, but City do beyond what we did. I have them beating Madrid.”
Manchester City has been dominant in both domestic and European competitions this season. They appear to be on course to win the Premier League title, with four points and four games remaining. City has displayed a level of stability and tactical excellence under Pep Guardiola that has made them a force to be reckoned with.
Rooney also said that Real Madrid could not be written off. “You can never write off a collective with Madrid’s experience and history— but I wouldn’t put money on them. I believe this is City’s year,” said the Englishman.

Wayne Rooney thinks Manchester City will blow away Real Madrid
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney thinks Manchester City will overcome Copa del Rey winners Real Madrid with ease. The two face off in a Champions League first leg tie on May 9 at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“Manchester City will not just beat Real Madrid in their Champions League semi-final — they’ll blow them away,” the former England international said. “Of course, I may be wrong. There is no side better at disproving arguments against them than Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid in the Champions League. But I just think City are so good that they’re on another level.”
Rooney also commended Pep Guardiola’s management abilities and the team’s outstanding performance this season. Despite the fact that Real Madrid defeated Manchester City at the same stage of the tournament last year, Wayne Rooney believes the tables have turned, with City being stronger in defence and more patient with the ball.
