The Super Bowl stole the show on Sunday night as the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers to their second consecutive title. Patrick Mahomes was crowned as the MVP for the third time in his career as social media went into a frenzy. However, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney wasn’t impressed back in 2012, when the star attended the 2012 Super Bowl.

Footballers have also shown a strong interest in American football in recent times, with Antoine Griezmann being the number one candidate. Rooney’s viral tweet from 2012 seems to make a comeback every year around the time of the Super Bowl. The former England and United captain failed to be amused by the Super Bowl, as he penned a ‘less-than-amused’ tweet on Twitter.

In it, he said,

How do they call this football. Like watching paint dry. Looking forward to adverts and music.

The iconic tweet posted over 12 years ago is still making rounds on Football Twitter.

The 2012 Super Bowl was played between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. The Giants won the game 21-17 to lift the title, which was also the fourth in their history.

Football x NFL: What was the hype surrounding the Super Bowl ahead in the football community

Football clubs have recently taken a keen interest in partnering with and promoting the National Football League or the NFL. For starters, Atletico Madrid and Antoine Griezmann combined for a post ahead of the Super Bowl, where they showed Koke and Antoine Griezmann representing the two teams instead of their respective captains.

Premier League giants Manchester City were quick to pounce on the opportunity as well. The club’s latest Instagram post featured the likes of Pep Guardiola, Erling Haaland, and Jeremy Doku all wearing NFL gear while standing in a huddle that resembles that of American football. Real Madrid on the other hand, have hit up a partnership with the NFL to host games at the Santiago Bernabeu next season.

Tottenham Hotspur have also announced their partnership with the league. The NFL will play two regular season games in their stadium until 2029. The footballing community took a keen interest in the NFL when Kansas City Chiefs players Travis Kelce and JuJu Smith Schuster imitated Erling Haaland’s celebration. The Premier League USA’s official account recently made a surprising claim that Kelce hadn’t lost a Super Bowl since he did the Haaland celebration.
