After the club revealed a net loss of £115.5 million for the 2021–22 season, Manchester United is “ahead of schedule” in their mission to rebuild their playing roster and anticipates less activity in future summer transfer windows.

Manchester United’s sporting director John Murtough said”: Overall, we are ahead of schedule in our recruitment plans as envisaged at the start of the summer, and we do not anticipate same level of activity in future windows,”. “As always, our planning focuses on the summer window.”

Murtough added: “We will continue to support Erik in ensuring he has players with the right quality and characters to achieve success, while ensuring that investment remains consistent with our commitment to financial sustainability.”

Despite income increasing by 18% to £583 million as a result of the full return of spectators to English football stadiums, figures revealed on Thursday for the fourth quarter of their fiscal year indicated losses that were £23 million more than those of the previous 12 months. Due to the weak British pound relative to the US dollar, the club’s net debt increased from £419.5 million to £514.9 million. United attributed this to the increase. Additionally, United distributed a record dividend to shareholders of £33.6 million.

Following the signings of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane, and Jadon Sancho in the summer of 2021, the club’s finances for 2021–22 showed that they had the highest pay expenditure in Premier League history, breaking Manchester City’s previous record of £355 million.

United struggled to sixth place in the Premier League and Europa League qualification despite that investment in players. The absence of Champions League football means the Red Devils a predicting relatively static revenue for 2022-23. Richard Arnold, the CEO, said the following on a conference call with investors: “Clearly our on-pitch performance in finishing sixth in the Premier League last season fell short of our aims and expectations. In response, we have made important and necessary changes, including new leadership for the men’s first team under Erik ten Hag and the strengthening of the playing squad during the summer transfer window.”

United spent more than £200 million during that summer’s action, which is the highest they’ve ever spent during a single transfer window, on players like Antony, Casemiro, and Lisandro Martinez, with Brazilian midfielder Andreas Pereira the lone transfer that generated a sizeable profit. Although high-earning players like Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, and Edinson Cavani did leave the club on free transfers and off the salary bill, football director John Murtough stated that the club does not plan to be as active in the upcoming transfer windows.
