“We will continue to fight with racism”- Pele extends support to Vinicius over signature dance celebration

Vinicius and Pele

In a recent Instagram post Pele offered his opinion on the situation, asserting that football should be a joyful activity while also highlighting the significance of the continuous fight against racism.

Pele captioned : “Football is joy. It’s a dance. It’s more than that. It’s a real party. Although racism still exists we will not allow that to stop us from continuing to smile. And we will continue to fight with racism everyday in this way fighting for our right to be happy and respected.”

A Spanish football agent made a racial remark during a live television broadcast. With Neymar encouraged his Brazil teammate to continue dancing, Newcastle player Bruno Guimaraes has called for the arrest of a Spanish agent who instructed Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. to “stop playing the monkey.”

The president of Spanish football agents, Pedro Bravo, made the racial remark while appearing on the divisive El Chiringuito television programme. He said when discussing Brazil international Vinicius: “You have to respect your opponents. When you score a goal, if you want to dance Samba, you should go to sambodromo in Brazil. You have to respect your mates and stop playing the monkey.”

The national teammates have encouraged Vinicius

Since then, Bruno has spoken out in favour of his fellow countryman and urged the appropriate authorities to act. In a social media post, he stated: “This MORON needs to leave this place arrested! No excuses. If a guy says this on live TV, just imagine what he says when he’s not. Inconceivable if this guy is not jailed.”

Neymar also tweeted on social media, ostensibly in response to criticism of Vinicius Jr.’s celebration decision. He wrote in Portuguese only. “DANCE VINI JR”. He added on Instagram: “Dribble, dance and be you! Happy just the way you are. Go for it my boy, next goal we dance!” The Madrid star replied: “All the time!”

Raphinha, a winger for Barcelona, posted a photo of Vinicius dancing on Instagram with the caption, “I want to see dances, I want to see joy, forget about it.”

Vinicius himself has faced racism in the past, and it has long been a problem in Spanish football. The Real Madrid attacker claimed racial abuse was directed at him during a Clasico match against Barcelona in 2021, and Mallorca fans allegedly chanted racist slurs at him in 2022, to which he retaliated by dancing in front of them after scoring.
