“What about the players?”- Former Manchester United star disagrees with Gary Neville over Red Devils’ consistent failures
Patrice Evra and Gary Neville
There is no doubt that Patrice Evra and Gary Neville disagree over who at Manchester United should be in charge. The Red Devils have had a difficult start to the season, losing their first two matches to Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion. Given the manner of their losses and subsequent transfer market failures, an evaluation of responsibility has already begun.
United’s expensively assembled team has consistently underperformed, their most recent championship came in 2017. They came in sixth place the previous season, prompting strong requests for a team reconstruction, which Erik ten Hag has resisted.

However, after their most recent game, former star Evra is emphatic that the players must take responsibility for their actions. He stated : “We blame the board, the manager, and many people. But what about the players? I always have so much respect for the players but now I think it’s time for them to take some responsibility. I also blame Ten Hag, he’s been fooled by all those players, the same way other managers have been fooled by them”.
“In pre-season they looked so good, and he would have been excited to make them even better, but no. Psychologically they are broken. Every time they face a difficult challenge, those players won’t overcome it. It’s been like this for years and it’s the same thing, it doesn’t even hurt anymore, it’s deja vu.“
But Evra’s analysis contradicts Gary Neville’s assessment from the previous week. The Sky Sports analyst, who has watched the collapse of his former team since his retirement, has long had issues with the Glazers and seemed to clear the Brentford players of any wrongdoing.
