“Whilst we were battering you and winning league title after league title” – Former Manchester United player Gary Neville hits back at Jamie Carragher in a friendly banter

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville

Gary Neville has refuted claims made by his former England teammate Jamie Carragher that Manchester United is still paying him. The Glazer family, United’s owners, has recently come under a lot of scrutinies.

There was a protest during the Premier League opener against Brighton, and more protests are expected before the next home game against Carragher’s former team, Liverpool. Neville frequently appears with Carragher in the Sky Sports studio, and the latter suggested that Neville might feel at ease accepting payment from the team in an ambassadorial capacity. The assertion, though, was quickly refuted.

“I’m thinking you will call for the Glazers to sell the club, after not saying it once while they paid you,” Carragher tweeted. Neville responded by reminding his colleague of United’s dominance during the period in question, making reference to his team “Whilst we were battering your lot [Liverpool] and winning league title after league title”.

In response, Carragher asserted that Sir Alex Ferguson’s presence in the dugout was the reason for those victories. “Because of SAF, so if you get another top manager the Glazers are fine to stay!” he said “You still getting paid as an ambassador” “That’s a lie!” was Neville’s response. “Not been paid a penny from the club in 11 years!!”

Gary Neville had previously targeted Manchester United owners the Glazer family

Gary Neville angry at Manchester United and Liverpool

Gary Neville heavily targeted the Glazers back in June. At the time, Manchester United had just finished a disappointing sixth in the Premier League, and its owners were expected to receive millions of pounds in dividends. “That’s why Dividends have to stop for a period,” Neville said.

“Every penny has to go back into the club until it becomes attractive again. The club has become a graveyard for players. Culturally for owners to take [money] out of a poorly performing business is demoralizing! The Glazer Family should NOT be taking £11m in dividends this Friday,” he said in an earlier post.

“It isn’t right with the investment needed in the team, stadium and training ground. The clubs’ cash position is low compared to previous years. An announcement is needed to halt it for the next three years minimum,” he added.
