Mexico announced 26-man squad for 2022 FIFA World Cup, Santiago Gimenez misses out

Mexico Football Team

Mexico, who placed second in the CONCACAF qualifying matches behind Canada on goal differential, will play in their eighth straight World Cup in Qatar. Their best results came in the 1970 and 1986 editions, when they, coincidentally, were the hosts on both occasions and advanced to the quarterfinals. Can they advance this time around after losing in the Round of 16 last time?

Along with group favorites Argentina, Asian superpower Saudi Arabia, and Robert Lewandowski’s Poland, they were placed in Group C.  Undoubtedly a difficult group, but Tata Martino will be hoping that his team can at least get to the knockout rounds from where anything is then possible.

Tata Martino likes to use the standard back four. Hector Moreno, Nestor Araujo, and Jesus Gallardo are among the veteran candidates for Mexico’s backline, and they are joined by some young talents like Kevin Alvarez, Jesus Angulo, and Johan Vasquez.

The Strongest Eleven of Mexico National Team:

If there are no safety concerns about injuries, Ochoa should start between the sticks. Moreno and Araujo are most likely Martino’s two centre-backs. Arteaga might move to the other wing, while Sanchez could fill in at right-back. Rodriguez may join the two seasoned players in midfield, Herrera and Guardado.

If Jimenez isn’t cleared, Lozano, Vega, and Funes Mori might play as the front three in place of injured winger Corona. Jesus Corona of Sevilla will not travel to Qatar due to an injury, and Martino will no longer consider Javier Hernandez as a striker due to tactical considerations.
