WNBA team Seattle Storm honored USWNT legend Megan Rapinoe with a jersey to match her wife Sue Bird. The Seattle Reign FC star had announced her retirement from The National team way ahead of the Women’s World Cup, stating that it would be her last. Seattle Storm honored the player with the No.15 jersey. Which is both the USWNT’s star number as well as the retired jersey number of Storm legend Lauren Jackson.
The power couple has been the center of attention especially at WNBA fixtures in their hometown. The crowd went wild for her as she put on the jersey and posed in an animated fashion to the audience. In her retirement press conference, Rapinoe said, “I want to thank my family for being by my side all these years. Thanks to all my teammates and coaches all the way back to my first days in Redding, on to college at the University of Portland, and of course thanks to U.S. Soccer, the Seattle Reign, and especially Sue, for everything.”
The USWNT were left disappointed in the World Cup as they crashed out in the RO16. Megan Rapinoe missed in the penalty shootout as the Swedes won 5-4 on penalties. The reigning world champions went out fairly early in the competition as Rapinoe received harsh criticism for her missed penalty. She and her partner Sue Bird will continue to be icons of women’s sports.
Spain becomes just the second nation to win both Men’s and Women’s World Cup
England and Spain went head-to-head in the clash of two big nations in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Final, held in Australia. The game was meant to be a thrilling encounter, but it was La Furia Roja who came up trumps over the Lionesses. England were undefeated up until the finale, but it was not to be. The final score was 1-0 in regular time.
Further, the win also means that Spain becomes the second nation to win both the Men’s and the Women’s World Cup. They also became just the 5th nation to win the Women’s World Cup as they join the elite club of the USA, Germany, Japan, and Norway.
