Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso. However, the former Spain international plans to take over as Real Madrid manager when Carlo Ancelotti departs the Santiago Bernabeu.

Despite his lack of experience at the top level, PSG is said to be interested in Alonso because of the way his team plays and his management of the players. They have already got in touch with the 41-year-old in an attempt to snap him up.

They are unlikely to succeed in their pursuit of Alonso, though, due to two factors. To begin with, the 41-year-old does not want to leave Bayer Leverkusen straight away. The club is also eager to offer him a new deal. Furthermore, there have been claims Alonso wants to succeed Ancelotti as Real Madrid manager whenever the Italian mastermind steps down.

Whenever Ancelotti’s future was in doubt in recent months, Alonso’s name came up frequently as a possible replacement. However, the 63-year-old Real Madrid manager is expected to stay at the club for another season, as his contract expires next year. Sources say Alonso is very keen on replacing Ancelotti when that happens.

Alonso, 41, is a Real Madrid icon who spent numerous successful years with the club during his playing career. Since retiring, the former midfielder has worked as a coach with the Merengues’ junior teams and with Real Sociedad’s reserves.

Bayer Leverkusen gave Alonso his big break earlier this season, and he’s had a great season in Germany. Under his guidance, Bayer Leverkusen has showcased a more dynamic and cohesive style of play. The Spaniard has implemented a strong focus on player development, allowing several promising prospects to thrive.

Die Werkself has risen from 17th to sixth place in the Bundesliga league thanks to the 2010 FIFA World Cup champion. He also led them to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals, where they were defeated by Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma. Although Leverkusen fell short of reaching the final, their campaign highlighted Alonso’s ability to guide his team to new heights on the European stage.
