Xabi Alonso is regarded as one of the best midfielders of his generation. His technique, passing range, and work rate were some of his greatest traits. His performances for Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich put him up with some of the greatest midfielders of all time.
After retiring in 2017, Alonso worked for his coaching badges, starting by coaching Real Madrid’s U-14 team in 2018. He returned to Real Sociedad a year later, where he coached their reserves and finally turned to professional football in 2022. In his first job as a manager, he started to coach Bayer Leverkusen in 2022.

With him completely transforming Leverkusen into title challengers, with a 6-point lead over Bayern Munich, many have praised his tactical prowess. But despite being retired for 6 years, he still has the same skill set from his playing days. In a new video, Xabi Alonso was taking drills during training, where he played cross-field balls for his players. Each long ball he played to his players was accurate, just like the ones he played in his time as a player.
Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten run in Germany
Xabi Alonso joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2022, replacing Gerardo Seoane. When he took the job, Leverkusen were 17th in the League. In his first season, he managed to get the team back to the top 6 and into the semifinals of the Europa League. With interest from other teams in Europe, Alonso signed a contract extension till 2026 and started dominating the league.

As of now, Leverkusen are at the top of the league, with 42 points in 16 matches. They have a 6 game lead over giants Bayern Munich and have topped their Europa League group. They have also reached the quarterfinals of the DFB Pokal. With all this success, Xabi Alonso has managed to not lose a single match in the 2023/24 season. Out of the 25 matches the club has played since the start of the season, their worst result has been when they drew to Bayern, Borussia Dortmund, and VFB Stuttgart.
With the Christmas break on, Xabi Alonso and his team have the challenge of keeping Bayern away from the top. They return to football on 13th December, when they travel to Bavaria to play FC Augsburg. Leverkusen plays Bayern in February in the BayArena. As of now, they have not gotten their round of 16 opponents in the Europa League due to the Knockout play-offs.
