FC Barcelona struggled to impress yet again as matchday 19 in La Liga saw the defending champions concede 5 goals at home! Xavi and co. took on Villarreal at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Saturday night. In a game that truly highlighted the state of their season, the embarrassing loss forced Xavi Hernandez to admit that he can ‘never’ become the Sir Alex Ferguson of Barcelona.

Even though Villarreal were two goals ahead in the 54th minute, Xavi’s men did well to turn the game around. The home side struck back through quick goals from Ilkay Gundogan, Pedri and forced an own goal from Eric Bailly to go 3-2 up with 20 minutes to go. However, just as Barcelona were withing touching distance of the win, Villarreal attackers swooped in to spoil the party.

You guys asked me if I'd be the Sir Alex Ferguson of Barcelona. The truth is it will never happen. You guys won't allow it. Being Barcà coach is so difficult.

Further, Xavi complained how the media and press attack him after negative results, going as far as to use adjectives like ‘they kill you’ and that it has had an effect on him as well.

The club have now lost consecutive games while conceding 4 or more goals. Following the game, Xavi announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of his contract, on June 30th.

Fans rally in support of Xavi as Barcelona ‘humiliate’ themselves against Villarreal

Being Barcelona coach is no easy task. Following a sequence of unfavorable games and ‘unlucky’ results, Xavi finds his team ten points from the top. However, as the media looms over Xavi’s head, calling for his resignation, supporters have rallied in support of the club legend. While it is often ‘customary’ to blame the coach for failures, the major part of the blame has been kept on the attackers this time round.

A fan commented that Xavi had already surpassed Sir Alex in that Xavi came in and led the club to a La Liga title with a ‘dysfunctional’ squad. Another said that even Pep Guardiola, the most revolutionary manager at the club, couldn’t stay for long at Barca. There was a consensus among fans that Xavi had indeed tried his best during his time at the club. Many censured those who were constantly criticizing Xavi for his actions at the helm.

With Xavi’s announcement of his departure in June, fans pointed out how he fought to bring success during his time at Barcelona. In spite of rocky and unfavorable results this season, the legendary midfielder was praised for the club’s La Liga triumph and Spanish Super Cup victory with a ‘less-than-competitive’ Barcelona squad. After two consecutive losses in the league, Barca now take on Osasuna on the 31st.
