Why isn’t Cristiano Ronaldo nominated for the Premier League player of the season award in 2021-22?

Why isn’t Cristiano Ronaldo nominated for the Premier League player of the season award in 2021-22?

Despite having the most Premier League Player of the Month awards and the third most goals in the league, Cristiano Ronaldo still wasn’t nominated for the Player of the Year award.

True, Manchester United has been awful but Ronaldo has still produced moments of magic. He’s also been the match-winner seven times, more than any other player in the league. He wouldn’t have deserved to win, but a nomination would have only been fair.

Manchester United’s disastrous season

Nothing has gone up to plans for Manchester United this season, they were one of the heavy favorites to compete for the Premier League after finishing second last season, and with the arrival of the blockbuster signing of Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho, and none other than the GOAT Cristiano Ronaldo.

All their signing have shown patches of brilliance but have not been consistent throughout the season. Varane has been in and out of the starting eleven because of his injury vows as for Jadon Sancho, he started the season with zero goal involvements in the first seven premier league appearances but since had performed well and has been one of few good performers as of lately.

As for Cristiano Ronaldo, he started the season on fire scoring in every half-chance coming his way, but since the arrival of the interim boss, Ralf Rangnick has had a dip in his form.

United established players such as club captain Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, and many others had been heavily criticized for their substandard performances which also eventually lead to the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjær and the appointment of Ralf Rangnick which hasn’t been fruitful with United having 58 points after 37 games which is their worst points tally in Premier League era.

Despite Manchester United being on the course of finishing with their worst points tally in the Premier League era, Ronaldo has scored 18 goals and 3 assists in just 30 games for the struggling side.

Stats like this are better than other attacking players such as Bukayo Saka, James Ward-Prowse, and Jarrod Bowen who are nominated for the PL player of the year award. But the aforementioned players have performed exceptionally which is the reason why their club’s position is well above the expectations at beginning of the season.

Even though Cristiano has goals and performances to show for it, his Manchester United has had a catastrophic season which may make many pundits and fans alike unjustifiable to include him as the best player of the season.

Cristiano Ronaldo is a goal-scoring behemoth. Ronaldo has scored more than 20 goals in every season since he left England to join Real Madrid. Fans’ expectations were that he would be the top scorer this season by a country mile but that he not been the case. He is currently third in the standing but has not held the top spot after a single matchday.

For your information, Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Premier League player of the season award two times which is joint most which he shares with Thiery Henry and Nemanja Vidic.

His last win came in the 2008-09 season, the season in which he scored the exact same amount of goals as he has scored this season i.e 18, and recorded fewer assists i.e one as for three this season but was most importantly a Premier League champion which made his odds of winning the award inevitable.
