David Beckham and Indian Cyclist named after him

David Beckham, who was riding for India in the Commonwealth Games cycling team sprint, entered the scorching saddles of Birmingham 2022 and finished sixth.

David Beckham Elkatohchoongo, who was a surprise inclusion to the velodrome cast and is named after the deity of England football, stated that he was only permitted in after border authorities double-checked his passport.

Elkatohchoongo and Ronaldo Laitonjam, who is named after the legendary Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho, teamed up as India’s team sprint trio placed sixth in the Games’ qualifying round. On the Lea Valley VeloPark’s sharply banked turns, they could definitely bend it like Beckham.

Elkatohchoongo also disclosed after his first race at the elite level: “When I got to the airport, the (passport) inspector said, ‘Is that really your name, David Beckham? You are lying, you are not David Beckham.”

“Then he saw my ID and had to concede that my real name was David Beckham. It is because my father was a professional street footballer. When I was in my mum’s tummy, in the hospital my dad said, ‘When the baby is taken out, he shall be named David Beckham.”

He said his father adored and was a huge fan of the Englishman David Beckham since he was such a phenomenal athlete.

“I would love to win a medal and meet him because I am in his country. My father and I would be so happy.

Laitonjam was as excited to be the standard-bearer for another illustrious football name, even if India’s time of 44.702 seconds in the men’s team sprint wasn’t quite fast enough to qualify for the medal races.

“My father was a tremendously huge Ronaldinho supporter in football,” he remarked. “In 2002, when I was born, I believe my father placed a significant wager on Ronaldo. He kicked a goal and I just came out, and that’s how my father made my name Ronaldo.”

“Of course the name gives me confidence. Ronaldinho and Ronaldo are champions. I’m lucky that I’m carrying that name and following my path to be a champion.”
