“You have to get rid of him”- Ex-Manchester United forward urges Red Devils to sell Cristiano Ronaldo

Saha and Ronaldo

Former Manchester United forward Louis Saha thinks that if Cristiano Ronaldo “doesn’t want to play for them longer,” his old team should try to trade him this summer.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner missed Man United’s preseason trip to Thailand and Australia due to family obligations, and speculation over his future has continued to dominate the club’s summer news cycle.

On Tuesday morning, he and his agent, Jorge Mendes, arrived back at Man Utd’s training facility. Sir Alex Ferguson was also seen arriving at Carrington, however, it’s thought he was there for a normal board meeting with chief executive Richard Arnold.

Erik ten Hag has persisted in saying that the 37-year-old is very much a part of his preparations for the forthcoming season despite Ronaldo looking to push for the Old Trafford exit doors this summer in pursuit of a team presently competing in the Champions League.

Saha, who played with Ronaldo at Man Utd from 2004 to 2008, thinks his old club must “make a choice” or face additional “disruption” to Ten Hag’s early term. With the Premier League’s opening bell rapidly approaching and a resolution to the Ronaldo conundrum having yet to materialize.

Saha said when asked if Man Utd should release Ronaldo, “Yeah, you have to get rid of him if he doesn’t want to play for the club longer.”

“He didn’t participate in the tour; he’s not been in training, so you have to show discipline. He’s a world-class player so maybe his circumstances are unique but there is a limit to what you can take.

“The group needs to gel, it’s not an individual sport. I’m the biggest supporter of Cristiano, I understand his priorities but at some point, the disruption has to stop. You have to make a decision and I’m keen to see how it all plays out.”

Before Man Utd’s 2022–23 Premier League season opener against Brighton on home turf, Ten Hag has two more preseason games to complete, starting this weekend in Norway against Atletico Madrid and concluding next Sunday at Old Trafford against Rayo Vallecano.
