Ole Gunnar Solskjær says he was proud of his Manchester United side, as United end the season being unbeaten away from home
Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s Manchester United finished the season without losing a league match away from home, ending their season with a 2-1 away win against Wolves.
United became just the fourth club in English top-flight history, after Preston (1888-89), Arsenal (2001-02) and Arsenal again (2003-04), to remain unbeaten away from home across an entire campaign. Solskjær’s side completed the feat on the final day of the Premier League season as they defeated Wolves 2-1 at Molineux, the first time the Norwegian has won there as a manager.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær appeared to be more concerned about Wednesday’s Europa League final
With the Europa League final just three days away, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær named a much-changed starting eleven including a mix of youth and experience for the final-day contest at Molineux, and was impressed with his side’s performance.
Hannibal Mejbri and Will Fish came on for their senior United debuts and after the match as Solskjær once again showed his faith in the club’s illustrious youth academy.
“I was very proud of the players today,” said Solskjær. “They were excellent. Seeing people expressing themselves, enjoying themselves. It was a game in the spirit of Manchester United, Sir Alex and Sir Matt, that you give these players a chance.“
“Maybe what you don’t see is his attitude, desire and personality. He has a great attitude and is really humble, works really hard. He has got some attributes that you wish for as a player, that pace, that directness. He is right-footed but is equally good on his left. I have not seen him score headers so that is a big bonus as well.” Ole heaped praise on youngster Anthony Elanga, as he scored his first goal in United colours.
“If we had played yesterday I would probably have picked a different team. I am glad I didn’t because it’s the first win I have had here.“
“Fair play to La Liga, moving seven games just for Villarreal to have another day of preparation. They could have played tonight and rested players against Real Madrid, it could have been a different result and you never know what that would have changed. Good by them and we have to think about it ourselves, definitely. We did not ask the Premier League but of course, whenever we can help our own teams we should do it.” the Norwegian was clearly annoyed that the Spanish side had an extra day to prepare for the match in Gdansk, with Villarreal finishing their La Liga campaign yesterday.
“It was about time we did it, we haven’t done it before.
What an achievement by all the players, they’ve been excellent and I knew we put this record on the line by making all these changes but we had to. One because we believe in these players, and two because the other players that have played so much this season needed an energy boost for Wednesday.” told Ole about Manchester United’s record breaking campaign finishing unbeaten away all season.
“I will wait for Wednesday. Maybe see if he can run on Tuesday but it is still a bit away. I don’t expect him to be ready. Of course, he wants to play but it is going to be up to the doctor. I don’t expect him to be ready. It does not look great but, ever the optimist, I am still hopeful.” Solskjær provided a small update on Maguire’s injury and how likely he is to feature in the Europa League Final.
“He has to train on Tuesday when we are over there. It is not many days. I don’t expect him to be ready.”
“You always feel pressure at Man United to win things, win trophies. That is one of the steps. Sometimes a trophy can hide other imperfections but the progress in the league, that we have been in loads of semi-finals, it shows progress. But the next step for this team is to win trophies and challenge the champions in the Premier League as well.“
“When you win things, you just want to win more. You want to feel that sensation. I know my players will believe but when you get the taste of that first one, it is a big step in the right direction. It is that taste for it. The belief is there, for sure.” Ole told about his next target at United.
Solskjær’s Manchester United face Villareal in the Europa League Finals on 27th May, as he looks forward to sealing his first silverware as United manager.
