PFA announce the Premier League Team of the Year

Six Manchester City players are named in the Premier League Team of the Year, as the Premier League Champions dominate the list released by Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) on Friday.

Ederson, Joao Cancelo, John Stones, Ruben Dias, Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan all make the team, as the champions have six players making the final cut in the squad which is voted by fellow players. Two Manchester United players also have their places, as the Red Devils are represented by their top performers Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes in the team of the year.

Eight players from the two Manchester sides make it into the final squad of the PFA Team of the Year, with six players from Manchester City and two players from United. Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne is the only player to retain his place from the team released in 2019-20, who was eventually adjudged the PFA Player of the Year last year.

Manchester City‘s Golden Glove winner Ederson is selected at goal, with City defenders Joao Cancelo, Ruben Dias and John Stones constitute the backline along with Manchester United’s left-back Luke Shaw, who has left behind his injuries and have been in top form for United. Ruben Dias is an automatic selection with his defence transforming performance throughout the season for City, as he was also named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.

In midfield, Ilkay Gundogan is picked who is surprisingly City’s top scorer this season, winning back to back Premier League player of the month, along with last year’s PFA Player of the Year Kevin De Bruyne, who performed this season too even though it was marred by injuries, as he notched up six goals and 12 assists. Manchester United‘s influential talisman Bruno Fernandes complete the midfield after a brilliant season with the Devils, having scored 18 and setting up a further 12 goals.

City youngster Phil Foden, who had been in exceptional form for City last season, however misses out.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane, who won the Premier League golden boot with 23 goals is joined by Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah up front, who is also the second-highest goalscorer in the league with 22 to his name. They are joined by Kane’s strike partner at Tottenham Son Heung Min Son’s who had 17 goals and 10 assists to his name as he combined with Kane 14 times, which also happens to be a Premier League record.

However, surprisingly no Chelsea players were included even after the Blues winning the Champions League and finishing runner up in the FA Cup.

The PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year will be announced on Sunday with Dias, Gundogan, De Bruyne and Fernandes being the ones shortlisted for that award, joined by the brilliant youngster Phil Foden, who is also nominated for the Young Player of the Year.
