Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski signed off the year in style with what was an exceptional 2021 for the Polish international. Coming into the last game of 2021 Lewandowski had the chance to equal five-time Ballon D’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for goal scored in a calendar year. Bayern’s last game against Wolfsburg was all centred around the Polish striker who was on course to equal Cristiano Ronaldo goal tally for the calendar year with one game to go.
Bayern were down to business as usual as the ever reliable Thomas Muller opened the scoring in the 7th minute. Early in the second half it was new signing Dayot Upamecano scored to double the before the man in form Leroy Sane all but confirmed the three points for Bayern in what was two goals scored in space of 2 minutes.
It was looking like another disappointment for Robert Lewandowski after he missed out on the Ballon D’or to Lionel Messi last month and now ever so close of matching Cristiano Ronaldo for goals in a year. However Lewandowski did manage to get on the scoresheet in the 87th minute after youngster Jamal Musiala played a cushioned header into Lewandowski’s path as the striker dispatched his shot with a great half volley finish. Now the lethal duo have the same number of goals in a calendar year eight years apart. However matching Lionel Messi’s 91 goals in a calendar year will take some doing even for a player like Robert Lewandowski.
The Polish is now the highest goal scorer in Bundesliga in a calendar year with 43 goals breaking the great Gerd Muller’s 50-year old record. It is fair to say that Bayern and Lewandowski have been at the top of their game for quiet sometime and the records speak for themselves.
