The Danish Captain Simon Kjaer and the Medical team will receive UEFA President’s Award 2021 for saving Christian Eriksen’s life

Christian Eriksen came face to face with death on 12th June 2021, when he suddenly had a heart attack and collapsed on the ground. This happened in the match between Denmark and Finland in Euro 2020 which was hosted at the Parken Stadium.
Things would be different today if not for the quick reaction of the Danish captain and the medical team which provided aid immediately. Simon Kjaer started with the initial CPR as soon as he understood the situation. He also formed a ring with the Danish team around Eriksen who was receiving medical attention.
“It’s something that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. The team reacted as a unit…as a team, we made the maximum effort to stick together and try to get through that situation and be as helpful as possible,” Simon Kjaer said as quoted by UEFA.

With the help of CPR and a defibrillator, the medical team was successful to bring back Eriksen to life. Eriksen was immediately taken to the hospital where an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator was installed in his heart which sends a shock to the heart when it stops and normalizes the heart rhythm.
“You did a fantastic job and saved my life,” Eriksen thanked the Parken medical team. “Also a big thanks to my friend and captain Simon and my teammates in the Danish team for your support, both on 12 June and afterward.”
Eriksen is still in recovery and is getting better day by day, but his football career is a no-go right now. The Italian club Inter Milan will not allow Eriksen to resume his training until and unless the ICD is removed from his heart.

“This year, the President’s Award transcends football. It serves as an important and eternal reminder of just how precious life is and puts everything in our lives into the clearest perspective. I would also like to send my very best wishes to Christian Eriksen and his family as he continues his recovery “
