Premier League: 6 instances when goalkeepers scored a goal
It is always enjoyable to watch the goalkeeper get in the opposition box for a last minute set-piece, not because they leave their goalposts unattended, but also because sometimes they do the unthinkable by slotting the ball into the net and save their team. This is one way how a goalkeeper puts their name on the scoresheet, while the other is when the goalkeeper lobs the ball so hard from his own penalty area that it flies onto the other goal, making mockery of the opposite keeper.
In the Premier League era, a total of six goalkeepers have been able to find the opposite net.
1. Peter Schmeichel
For Aston Villa, against Everton, 20th October, 2001
One of the greatest goalkeepers to ever stand between the posts, Peter Schmeichel was a regular in the opposite box in the dying minutes whenever he got the thumbs up from the manager. The legendary Dane also has a tally of 10 goals in his entire career.
Schmeichel got his Premier League goal, which was also the very first by a keeper in the modern PL era, when he connected a volley so hard that the Everton goalie had no control over it.
2. Brad Friedel
For Blackburn, against Charlton, 21st February, 2004
Brad Friedel was one of the longest serving goalkeepers to the Premier League, joining Liverpool in 1997 and departing from Tottenham in 2015. However, he was known for his spell in Blackburn Rovers where he made 290 appearances for the club.
The only goal in his long career came away at Charlton when he had to react quick to tap one in to equalize for his team. However, the goal was not the last of the game as Friedel conceded another one in the dying minutes.
3. Paul Robinson
For Tottenham, against Watford, 17th March, 2007
Paul Robinson was the England No.1 for a long time in the mid-2000s and had 424 appearances in the Premier League. Major chunk of his time was spread in between three clubs, Leeds, Tottenham, and Blackburn, but he also made three appearances for Burnley. Robinson had 41 caps for the English national team.
Robinson became the third keeper to score a Premier League goal when he launched a free kick from near the touchline of his own half and then watched it sail over the head of Ben Foster.
4. Tim Howard
For Everton, against Bolton, 4th January, 2012
Mainly known for his stint at Everton, Tim Howard was initially signed by Manchester United, where he made 45 appearances. However, fans recognize him from his heroics between the Everton goalposts and the warrior like performance in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Howard became the second American goalkeeper after Friedel, and the fourth overall to score in the Premier League, when he slammed a back pass that came his way towards the opposition goal as it bounced awkwardly over Adam Bogdan’s head and flew into the net.
5. Asmir Begovic
For Stoke City, against Southampton, 2nd November 2013
Asmir Begovic became a household name for the Premier League fans during his spell at Stoke. He also has a PL title to his name from the time when he served deputy to Thibaut Courtois at Chelsea. Begovic recently joined Everton and looks to fight for the No.1 position.
Begovic not only scored a goal, but also registered his name into the Guinness Book of World Records at that time thanks to his outrageous 91.9m kick. It was just 13 seconds in the clock when Begovic launched one long from just outside his 6-yard box.
6. Alisson Becker
For Liverpool, against West Brom 16th May, 2021
Currently one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Alisson has already scripted his name in many fairy tales. From being part of the comeback pulled by Roma against Barcelona, to Liverpool’s end to the title drought, and finally being on the scoresheet for Liverpool.
In the previous season, Liverpool were fighting for a top-4 spot with the score tied at 1-1 against relegation fighting West Brom. Tret Alexander Arnold whooped a corner in the 95th minute for Alisson to glance the ball with his head into the back of the net.
