For over a decade, Argentine footballing maestro Lionel Messi has been arguably the best player in the world in every attacking aspect of the game – both aesthetically and statistically. What makes him so special is the fact that despite being a forward in it’s true essence, Leo Messi often likes to operate from the back and work as a playmaker. Over the years, his playmaking skills have overshadowed his other out-of-the-world skills and there’s a valid reason for that.
While Lionel Messi is constantly rivalled by his on-field foe Cristiano Ronaldo, the Argentine sits alone at the top as far as playmaking is concerned. Yeah there have been players like Xavi, Iniesta, Ozil, Schweinsteiger and Pirlo who could compete against him in terms of skills but none of them were as consistent and as far as stats are concerned, the PSG star has always been way ahead, at least until now. As it now stands, Leo Messi might finally have got a worthy opponent who could dethrone him to claim the spot of the best playmaker in the world.
Dusan Tadic brakes Lionel Messi’s record
Ajax Amsterdam star Dusan Tadic has broken an incredible playmaking record that was until now, held by Lionel Messi. We are talking about the record of providing the most assists in a calendar year. Messi provided 36 assists in 2011 which was his prime at FC Barcelona. Ajax Forward Dusan Tadic has broken that record by providing 37 assists this year.
The Serbian has been one of the key players in the Dutch club’s setup ever since they joined them back in 2018. He was the unsung hero of Ajax’s dream run in the 2019 Champions League and unlike Frenkie De Jong, Mathias De Ligt and Hakim Ziyech who left the club soon after, the forward still remains with de Joden.
Dusan Tadic is just a year younger than Lionel Messi (i.e, 33 years old) but still shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. He has 11 assists in the Eredivisie already this season, which is the highest in the Dutch league. His teammate Sebastian Haller deserves some credit for this too though. The former West Ham forward has been in tremendous form and he is the top scorer of Eredivisie currently with 10 goals. He makes just no mistake in converting the sublime deliveries from Tadic.
