Sunil Chhetri overtakes Lionel Messi’s international goal scoring tally with a brace against Bangladesh
Sunil Chhetri, the Indian football captain has overcome Argentine forward Lionel Messi’s goal scoring tally in the international arena. Chhetri scored a brace in India’s victory over Bangladesh in their recent World Cup qualifying match.
India won the match 2-0, putting an end to their winless streak of 11 matches since 2019. Sunil Chhetri took his personal tally to 74 goals for the national team while Lionel Messi has 73 for Argentina.

Sunil Chhetri is now the third highest international goal scorer among active footballers behind Cristiano Ronaldo who has a massive tally of 102 goals. He also paved his way into the Top-10 goal scorers charts of All time courtesy of his brace against Bangladesh.
The Official Twitter handle of FIFA World Cup posted a congratulatory message for the Indian skipper recognising his efforts on the international scene.
Chhetri gave India a deserving lead against Bangladesh after 79 minutes when he headed home a fine cross from the left by Ashique Kuruniyan. He doubled India’s lead in the dying minutes of the match as he found the top-left corner of the net. It came with a superb assist from Suresh, who broke into the box from the right flank.
The Indian skipper earned plaudits from one and all for his impressive goal tally after India’s victory. This was India’s first win in 7th games in the Asian leg of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers and they now occupy the third spot in the Group E table behind hosts Qatar (19 points) and Oman (12).
