“I’ve never been before so to go and see Novak Djokovic play up close”- Chelsea’s Mason Mount opens up about his experience of watching tennis and F1
Due to the mid-season World Cup and the Three Lions’ four games ending on June 14— Mason Mount started three of them and entered the game in the other—the Premier League season got underway early. As a result, the calendar at this time of year is quite crammed.
The 23-year-old, however, still had time to enjoy a summer of sports as he was seen at various international competitions and on live morning television advertising his apparel line Mountchandise, with all revenues going to the charity Together for Short Lives. He also attended a pop-up shop event for it.
Mason Mount on his preferred sports:
There was even time for a trip to Los Angeles before this one, during which he was given a tour of the LA Dodgers baseball stadium, which is now associated with Chelsea as a result of the clubs’ common ownership.
‘I was lucky enough to go to another F1 race,’ Mount says as he reviews the rest of the past few weeks. ‘It was my second race of the summer, at Silverstone, and I was also able to go to Wimbledon.
‘I’ve never been before so to go and see Djokovic play up close, coming back from two sets down and looking like he could lose to then win three in a row, it was amazing to see that live.’
‘I’ve been to the O2 Arena to watch tennis before but when you’re at Wimbledon, it’s totally different, the feeling of it, and what a professional Djokovic is, and he has obviously gone on to win it.’
Mount opened up only a few hours after Californians watched the Wimbledon championship at breakfast.
Between the conclusion of Chelsea’s season and the England fixtures in June, Mount was able to fit in a trip to the Monaco Grand Prix, where his outfit, which was inspired by the chequered flag, definitely attracted some notice.
It is difficult to think that with such a little break this year, his fitness has to be much improved now that the play is over and the work has started.
With his Chelsea career thus far, Mount has established a high standard, taking home our Player of the Year accolade the previous two years. Does he set himself ever-higher personal goals as he starts to prepare for a new campaign, or is the focus now more on team goals?
Who will deny Mount can accomplish more after a little period of rest and re-energizement and inspiration from other sports stars?
