Lille locked horns against RB Salzburg in their previous Champions League encounter which was an away game being played at Red Bull Arena, Salzburg. Lille were having the worst time on the field and their mistakes awarded the home team with two penalties in quick succession.

A 35th minute & 53rd-minute penalty by Karim Adeyemi helped the home side gain an inevitable 2-0 lead. However, Burak Yılmaz gave his all in and pulled one back in for Lille in the next few minutes. As he could only manage to get the one solitary goal, Salzburg emerged victoriously and took hold of those three points and the top spot.

On the other hand, Sevilla were up against Wolfsburg at Volkswagen Arena in their previous encounter of the Champions League. A dry first half was met with a magnificent start to the second one. A couple of minutes into the second half, Renato Steffen created havoc in the defence and got the lead to Wolfsburg by netting a magnificent goal.

Their lead was being held onto for a very long time until they lost Josuha Guilavogui in the 85th minute to a red card situation.  A couple of minutes later, Sevilla were awarded a penalty and the Croatian star Ivan Rakitić made it 1-1 from the penalty spot for Sevilla and in the end, the points were split between the two teams.
