Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to take the penalty, after a lengthy delay caused by the VAR who were looking at the penalty decision. As Ronaldo seemed to put the ball on the penalty spot, Dara O’Shea, who was in near proximity of the striker deflected the ball with the back of the heel away from the spot. This triggered a reaction from Ronaldo who flapped his arms as if almost about to slap O’Shea in the face for deflecting the ball away from the penalty spot.

The referee was quick to diffuse the situation and did not allow it to elevate further. However, the trick by O’Shea seemed to have work to some extent, Ronaldo uncharacteristically missed from the spot and Ireland took the lead in the first half to further add salt to the wounds of Ronaldo.

However, he made amends for his miss and scored for them to win the tie 2-1 and with that secured the record of having scored the most number of international goals.
