“We must keep the momentum”- Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick urges team to keep the momentum ahead of a season defining month

A last gasp equaliser by teenager Anthony Elanga against Atletico Madrid earned Manchester United a 1-1 draw in the Champions League round of 16 first leg tie. Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick urges his side to keep the momentum going and especially more like the second half performance against Atletico Madrid.

The Red Devils now turn their attention back to the Premier League as they prepare to take on Watford at Old Trafford on Saturday. Ralf Rangnick says United should look for revenge after their horrific 4-1 defeat in November which saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacked. Since the arrival of Ralf Rangnick United have taken 29 points from the 14 Premier League games played. Rangnick have so far done a decent job of getting Manchester United’s season back on track and getting United from sixth to fourth in the table.

Ralf Rangnick pre-match press conference before Saturday’s home game against Watford in the Premier League

“It’s very important but this is the case for almost every game we play in the future. We have to keep the momentum, win tomorrow against Watford and then be ready to face the top teams. We have to be prepared for tomorrow.” Rangnick said in his pre-match press conference before game against Watford.

However Arsenal’s dramatic 2-1 win against Wolves on Thursday see them trail United by just one point and also having two games in hand on Rangnick’s men. Manchester United run into some serious and difficult run of fixtures in March which will definitely be monumental in their quest of finishing in the top four this season. Ralf Rangnick added that the upcoming fixtures are definitely crucial for United, “It could be but it only makes sense to take one game after another. The job now is to fully recover and play at the highest level possible tomorrow at home to win and then we have a full week to prepare for the derby.”

A story of two halves for Manchester United as they come to life in the second half against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League

Manchester United players having contrasting halves since the arrival of interim manager Ralf Rangnick

Since the arrival of Ralf Rangnick the difference in the performance levels of Manchester United in the two halves have been evident and it was the same story against Atletico on Wednesday night. United were all over the place in the first half at Wanda Metropolitano and started the game very slowly compared to the hosts and as a result conceded in the first ten minutes from a glancing header from Joao Felix. However the halftime team talk and some tactical changes by Ralf Rangnick got the Red Devils back in the game and eventually Anthony Elanga scored the equaliser just ten minutes from time.

The Manchester United players have been often criticised for getting the foot off the gas and unable to killing the games as the opponents find their way back, Or starting slow and then finishing the game strongly.

What do you think is the reason for United’s contrasting performances this season ?
