Bayern Munich pipped Borussia Dortmund to the 2022/23 Bundesliga title, due to having a better goal difference. But when was the last time a Bundesliga title was decided on that basis?

It was a title race for the ages, between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen. The year was 2000, a golden era for the team from the North Rhine-Westphalia. Unterhaching, a team from Munich’s outskirts, played a key role in a nail-biting end to a Bundesliga season. They had already clinched top-flight survival when leaders Leverkusen visited, needing only a point to finish ahead of Bayern and win their first Bundesliga title.

Bayern was 3-0 up just 16 minutes against Werder Bremen at the Olympiastadion, eventually winning 3-1 to cut the three-point gap to Bayer Leverkusen. However, the fate of the 1999/2000 Bundesliga title stilled lied with Bayer Leverkusen.

Unfortunately for manager Christoph Daum, his troops were not having such a good time. Unterhaching won 2-0, with star midfielder Micheal Ballack scoring his own goal and Markus Oberleitner adding another, to gift their neighbors the Meisterschale on goal difference and win an invitation to Bayern’s title party. It was yet another difficult evening for Leverkusen, who have never won the German top flight.

Has Borussia Dortmund lost out on the Bundesliga on goal difference before?

The 2022/23 season is not the first time Borussia Dortmund have lost out on the Bundesliga on goal difference. They were eclipsed by VfB Stuttgart on a dramatic final day in the 1991/92 Bundesliga. Eintracht Frankfurt appeared to be the champions, with their midfield partnership of Uwe Bein and Andreas Möller spurring them to the top of the table with only 90 minutes remaining.

They were level on points with Dortmund and Stuttgart, but the goal difference was firmly in their favor, and a trip to second-from-bottom Hansa Rostock looked like a gift. A 2-1 loss against Rostock in the 89th minute proved different and opened the way for Frankfurt’s opponents.

Dortmund were barely four minutes away from winning the league when Guido Buchwald headed Stuttgart 2-1 ahead against Leverkusen, giving the Swabians the trophy on goal difference.
