Zinedine Zidane tight-lipped on his future at Real Madrid ahead of their final La Liga game
Zinedine Zidane looks to leave Real Madrid at the end of this season
Real Madrid face their final La Liga match against Villarreal on Sunday as they look to defend their domestic title. Zidane’s men however, will have to rely on the results of their rivals Atletico Madrid dropping points if they are to win their 34th La Liga title on Sunday.
The match against Villarreal could be the French coach’s last as Spanish media outlets have claimed that he intends to leave the club at the end of the season. Zidane though did not answer questions regarding his future in the pre-match press conference and focused more on his side’s La Liga winning chances and spoke about the club in general.
Rumours in Spain suggest this could be Zidane’s final match in charge of Real Madrid
Madrid are two points behind Atletico heading into the final day, five clear of Barcelona and seven clear of Sevilla. Villarreal are also fighting for something. They want Europe, and currently sit seventh, just outside of the Europa League places.
“They’re level on points with Real Betis in sixth and one behind Real Sociedad in fifth, and also have the distraction of the Europa League final with Manchester United coming up this Wednesday.
“We’re going to leave everything on the field and we’re going to try,” Zinedine Zidane said pre-game in comments carried by Marca. “For us, the only thing that matters [right now] is tomorrow’s game. With everything that’s happened this year, we’re going to have a high-level game.”
“No, no, nothing, nothing. It’s only tomorrow’s game,” the French-man said at the press conference when asked if there have been any talks with the club. “The important thing is the team, not what I’m going to do.
“The most important thing is not me or someone else, but the team, tomorrow’s game, what we want to achieve tomorrow. That is the only thing that encourages us. It is the truth.
“Later we will see. We have time for that. This is not the time to talk about [my future]. Not just me, but what the club is going to do. We have to put all our energy into tomorrow’s game. After 37 games we are not going to waste time on that.”
Zidane was also asked if Madrid could be better without him in charge.
“Sure,” he replied. “Very sure.”
Zidane added: “I have returned here with a lot of energy and I have given everything. The only thing is that it is a complicated, difficult task. It is the day to day, you have to give up, but this is what encourages us too. We are very lucky to be at this great club.
