“Kvaradona’s price just went down”- Fans mock Napoli as AC Milan lodge their first Champions League Semifinal since 2007
Milan will play Inter in the semifinals if they can hold on to their 2-0 lead against Benfica.
AC Milan managed to claw their way into the semifinals after a 1-1 draw against Serie A leaders Napoli in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. This was the third time this year Stefano Pioli’s men managed to stop Luciano Spaletti. Milan won 2-1 on aggregate courtesy of their 1-0 win earlier last week.
Napoli is going through a rough patch since the start of April, they have won only one of the last four games. Interestingly, apart from the game they won, all the other three were against AC Milan.
Runaway leaders of Serie A, Napoli found themselves on the back foot in the first half despite having complete control of the ball. Despite having made 10 shots in the first half, the Rossoneri came closest to scoring.
Despite the mercurial Frenchman missing from the spot, it was again Giroud, who found himself at the end of a Rafa Leao ball and he slotted it home in just before the break. This made the score 2-0 for the seven-time Champions League winners.
The second half started in a similar vein. Napoli forwards made a meal of the chances they created. Both Kvaratskhelia and Osimhen continued to toy and tease the Milan defenders without troubling Mike Maignan as much as they would’ve wanted to.
Luciano Spaletti’s team continued to have a strong command over the game, and Milan held on with Rafael Leao being their brightest spark. Kvaratskhelia continued to light up the left flank with 10 dribbles out of 18 attempts. But Napoli failed to deliver the killer blow to their league rivals.
However, the turning point of the match came in the 78th minute of the game. A low cross from Giovanni Di Lorenzo struck the hand of Fikayo Tomori. However, the resulting penalty from Kvaratskhelia was saved incredibly by Mike Maignan. Had the Georgian managed to score the goal, it would’ve been a tight finish to the game. Nothing of the sort happened as a hapless and deflated Napoli failed to book their spot in the UCL semifinals.
