Chris Paul recalls his dark days with the Houston Rockets when they lost Game 6 and 7 to the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals in the 2017-18 season. CP3 has a lot of individual accolades to his name. But one thing missing, is the NBA Championship. The closest CP3 came was that particular instance being referred to with the Rockets.
Paul’s stint with the Oklahoma City Thunder against his former Rockets was successful in the previous season. But the team another major player alongside Paul in the clutch situations as they lost Game 7 in the first round. CP3 and Harden led the Rockets against a formidable force of Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry.
In his recent appearance at ex-teammate JJ Reddick’s podcast, Paul described how he felt about the same.
“That was one of the hardest things to deal with” Chris Paul
Paul said, “That was probably one of the hardest things to deal with, especially with the time, I mean so much stuff changes when you lose like that.”
He added, “We went up 3-2 so we went to Golden State and I remember I couldn’t play game six like I got nauseous on the court before the jump ball.
“I seriously got nauseous and dean (trainer) took me to the bathroom cause I had crazy anxiety. I never get that type of anxiety when I am playing, but it’s that control thing like how am I gonna be sitting out here and can’t affect this game.”
He added, “We lost that game six; we had a lead in that one too, but lost that one. In game seven, we lost that one. I was in a dark place. For a few weeks I was in a dark place.”
The Rockets had taken a 3-2 lead against the Warriors. By the end of the fifth game, Paul had suffered from an injury and missed the next two games. This changed the whole complexion of the series, which now favored the Warriors. Eventually the Dubs went onto win their second consecutive championship.
Now Paul sees himself in a Phoenix Suns team, hopeful of making it to the playoffs. With Paul, Booker and Ayton, the Suns, can surely make it to the playoffs. But challenging for the championship this season might not be possible. But as the NBA is known for, it holds it’s own suprises.
