Novak Djokovic has arrived at Wimbledon but doubts loom over his participation due to his fitness problem. Around three weeks ago, he underwent a procedure on his knee and his torn meniscus was removed. British No.1 Greg Rusedski believes this time Djokovic won’t be walking onto the Wimbledon grass courts as a heavy favorite.

Djokovic suffered the meniscus tear while slipping on the Philippe-Chatrier court during his fourth-round match against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo, which he won in five sets. Without wasting any time, he decided to undergo surgery. Rusedski believes Djokovic is practicing to get full fitness which will decide his participation at the SW19.

I will be very surprised if Novak plays Wimbledon. Great to see him on the court practicing, but I feel this is more of seeing where he is at and getting good preparation until he is 100%.

Djokovic hasn’t won a trophy this season even after featuring in six tournaments. The injury made him withdraw from the Roland Garros quarterfinal against Casper Ruud which saw Italy’s Jannik Sinner become the new World No.1.

Novak Djokovic will only play Wimbledon if he’s 100 percent fit

Though Novak Djokovic has started training for Wimbledon, he has declared that he won’t participate if he fails to play to his full potential. He said he was not pushing himself during training but would do so in the next few days.

I didn’t come here to play a few rounds. If I know I can play close to my maximum or at maximum, then I’ll play. If not, then I’ll give somebody else a chance to play. Rehab is going in the right direction every single day, a few percent better and better. That’s what’s giving me hope and encouragement to keep going.

Novak Djokovic told the BBC

Last year, the 24-time Grand Slam champion won three of the four Grand Slam titles, winning the Australian Open, French Open, and the US Open. His defeat came at Wimbledon. He reached the final but World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz beat him in five sets to lift his maiden title at SW19.

The last time the 37-year-old won the Wimbledon title was in 2022 when he beat Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in four sets. In total, the Serb has won seven titles at the SW19 and stands second on the all-time list along with Pete Sampras. Roger Federer tops the list with eight titles.
