Former hockey star and Olympic gold medalist Ravindra Pal Singh passes away

Ravindra Pal Singh, a member of India’s gold-medal winning team at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games breathed his last on Saturday at the age of 62. He was a bachelor throughout his life and lived with his elder sister in a joint family throughout. He had recovered from Covid-19 recently, but was not completely fine due to a breathing problem that he had, combined with anxiety.
Singh was reportedly shifted to an oxygen bed after his recovery from Covid-19, but even then his breathing problem continued to affect him. His condition then worsened by Friday and he was taken to the ICU and put on a ventilator. By early morning on Saturday, he passed away.

A member of Ravindra Pal Singh’s family spoke to reporters and said, “We changed a few hospitals for him, as in the other private hospitals even the doctors were careless and they didn’t provide him proper care. Finally, we admitted him to Vivekanada Polyclinic, which we trusted.”
Singh leaves behind an excellent legacy in the world of hockey. Beginning his international career in 1979, he went on to appear in the 1980 Moscow Games as well as the 1984 Los Angeles Games. He also took part in various tournaments like the Champions Trophy in Karachi in 1980 and 1983, the 10-Nation Cup in Hong Kong in 1983, World Cup in India in 1982, Asia Cup in Karachi in 1982 and the Malaysian Quadrangular series in 1980.
Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju released a statement on Singh’s death writing, “I’m deeply saddened to learn that Shri Ravinder Pal Singh ji has lost the battle to Covid19. With his passing away India loses a golden member of the hockey team that won Gold in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. His contribution to Indian sports will always be remembered. Om Shanti.”
