Former footballer Diego Forlan will make his professional debut in tennis in next month’s Uruguay Open. The former Manchester United striker retired from football in 2019. Forlan has been playing tennis in ITF Masters events since 2023.

The Uruguay Open, however, is an ATP event, a part of the ATP Challenger Tour and Forlan received the wild card to participate. In Montevideo, Forlan, who plays left-handed, will join Argentina’s Federico Coria for the doubles matches.

His partner Coria is World No. 101 in singles and stands in 49th position in 2023. He recently participated in Challenger Campinas where he was the top seed and lost to compatriot Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna in three sets in the first round. The 32-year-old reached a career-high ranking of 238 in doubles and is trophyless in both singles and doubles.

Diego Forlan won the Premier League with Manchester United

Before joining Manchester United, Diego Forlan played for the Argentine club, Club Atletico Independiente in 1997. He made his debut for Manchester United in 2002 and won the Premier League with the club in 2003/03 and the FA Cup in 2003/04. He made 98 appearances for the Red Devils.

Forlan joined La Liga club Villarreal in 2004 and, three years later, made his debut for Atletico Madrid, before joining Inter Milan in 2011. For Uruguay’s national team, he made 112 appearances and scored 36 goals.

Forlan has won the European Golden Shoe two times while he was in Spain. He also won the Golden Ball after Uruguay finished third at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Another major title of his career was the 2011 Copa America victory.

Apart from these clubs, Forlan also played for Mumbai City in the Indian Super League, J1 League side Cerezo Osaka, Penarol (boyhood club), and Kitchee, a Hong Kong Premier League club. After leaving Kitchee on May 13, 2018, Forlan retired from football on August 7, 2018.

Forlan also joined Penarol as its manager in December 2019 but was sacked almost a year later as his team performed poorly under him. He also became the manager of Atenas of the Uruguayan Segunda Division in March 2021 but was released six months later.
