NBA players generally find themselves amid politics. Not just by choice, but by the very fact that their voice is heard by millions of fans. Therefore, some talk about the issues their communities face. Sometimes politicians take those opinions in their stride. Some for the good, and some like former President Donald Trump, who despises what NBA stars say. However, former NBA player Royce White has taken his opinions to dive into the world of politics.

Royce White last played in the NBA in 2014. Having a fear of flying led him to miss out on a lot of games and eventually be waived by teams. He also played in the BiG3 league. Then after that, he tried his hand at mixed martial arts. White then took up activism when he led several protests in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. Since then, he took an active part in politics and rose through the ranks.

Now, he won the Republican Primary in Minnesota. That gives him a chance to go up against Amy Klobuchar to be the next Senator from the state. A long-standing supporter of Donald Trump, this win will help him shine in the world of politics. However, he has a reputation for controversial comments just like his political idol.

However, he is going up against the senator who has held the position of United States Senator from Minnesota for the past 17 years. It will not be an easy challenge going up against Amy Klobuchar who also heads the Senate Rules Committee. Nevertheless, maybe his past activism could help him.

Royce White’s fear of flying ruined a potentially good NBA career

The now 33-year-old was drafted by the Houston Rockets in 2012. As is generally expected of a 16th overall pick, Royce White was supposed to be a future star. However, he has an acute fear of flying. That fear did not flare up much during his time in college. But in the NBA, he had to fly almost 100 times as opposed to 20 in college.

In college, he used medication to help him through the flights. But flying five more times with to play in the NBA could have had a long-lasting impact on his health. The Rockets gave him a team bus to travel to games. Then a dispute with the organization led him to their G-League affiliate. After initially declining to play, he eventually spent time with the team.

The following season, the Rockets sent him to the Philadelphia 76ers. However, they waived him after his fear of flying became a deterrent. Had his medical condition not impacted his career, Royce White could have still been playing in the NBA. But life took him to politics.
