Former NBA champion James Posey went back down memory lane about the time he got suspended in Miami for not passing Pat Riley’s body fat test.

Strict program over there. Weight and body fat. I never been out of shape but I wasn’t in Pat Riley shape. I ended up getting suspended. I’m at like 9%, I was supposed to be at 8%. We get suspended, so it goes across the ticker on sports center saying ‘these players out of shape, Miami Heat.’ My name comes across my momma calls me ‘BOY, WHAT YOU DOWN THERE DOING!?’ I said ‘Ma, I ain’t even out of shape man! They want me at 8% and I’m at 9.’ That was a strict program.

There have been very few figures like Pat Riley in the NBA. Widely regarded as one of the greatest NBA figures of all time, Riley has reached 19 NBA finals across six different decades as a player, coach, or executive.

Riley never shied away from expressing himself. After his time with the New York Knicks in 1995, the 81-year-old became the President and head coach of the Miami Heat. After stepping down as head coach in 2008, Riley became a full-time President of the franchise, a position he has held since.

During his time as President, he acquired LeBron James and Chris Bosh in 2010  to form the Heat’s “Big Three” with Dwyane Wade. They made it to four NBA Finals and won two championships in 2012 and 2013.

However, Riley was different and was never afraid of getting on the wrong side of his star players. He forced Shaquille O’Neal out after an altercation, and his micromanagement of James led to the four-time champion’s eventual departure as well.

Several players have revealed Pat Riley’s attention to detail and micromanagement. Another former NBA champion with the Heat had a similar story to narrate about Riley.

Dorell Wright, who spent just one season with the Heat, said that Riley worked them so much that they couldn’t enjoy Miami.

Everything is about the numbers with Riles — the body fat, the weight…you hear about them “Heat culture” stories — all that sh*t real bro. They worked us so hard that we had no time for none of that stuff man, we didn’t really take advantage of South Beach because we were so tired from the workout. It can swallow you up, I’ve seen it happen with teammates…you can’t party or hangout in Miami and think you’ll be able to go through Pat’s program.

Riley was named as one of the ten greatest coaches in NBA history back in 1996. He was also inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach.

Pat Riley should sit down one-on-one with Ja Morant

Since the departure of Jimmy Butler at the trade deadline last year, the Miami Heat have struggled to make any noise in the Eastern Conference, and this season has been no different. They are locked in for another play-in tournament once again.

With no big-name player on the roster, pressure has been mounting on Pat Riley to make a move for Ja Morant. The Memphis Grizzlies were open to hearing offers for the 26-year-old at the trade deadline this year, but nothing materialized.

Former NBA player Joe Johnson believes Riley should make a move for Morant in the offseason.

I’m not going to lie, I think he would thrive in that Miami situation. One thing about Pat Riley, he’s going to have a real sit down 1 on 1 with him. He does that with everybody. It’s going to be something in that meeting you’ll be able to take, and run with…I never went to the club when I played for the Heat. We worked so hard I couldn’t wait to go lay down.
